EVs need less regular maintenance than gas cars, but “less” isn’t “none.” The maintenance list shifts away from engine-related service and toward a shorter set of wear items shared with any vehicle, plus a few things specific to EVs. Here’s what actually needs attention, and roughly how often.
The core maintenance checklist

What you won’t find on the list
No oil changes, no spark plug replacement, no transmission fluid service in most EVs, no exhaust system, and no fuel filters. This is the biggest practical difference from gas car ownership, and it’s the main reason EV maintenance schedules tend to be shorter and less frequent overall.
A note on tire wear specifically
Tires deserve extra attention on an EV. The combination of a heavier curb weight (from the battery pack) and instant torque from the electric motor can wear tires, especially the front or rear axle depending on drivetrain layout, faster than on a comparable gas car. Staying on top of rotation intervals and checking tread depth regularly rather than waiting for a scheduled visit helps avoid uneven wear and gets the most life out of a set of tires. Driving style matters here too; frequent hard acceleration wears tires faster regardless of what’s providing the power.
Seasonal considerations
Maintenance needs can shift a bit with the seasons. Cold weather affects battery performance and can make certain fluids and components work harder, and salted winter roads accelerate the brake corrosion mentioned above. Brakes deserve a special note
Regenerative braking means the physical brake pads and rotors typically wear more slowly than in a gas car, since the motor handles a lot of everyday slowing down on its own.
