Winter driving in an EV is very manageable once you know a handful of adjustments worth making. None of these are complicated, they’re mostly habits that take the edge off cold weather’s effect on range and comfort.
Before you leave
- Precondition the cabin while still plugged in. Warming up before you unplug means that energy comes from the wall, not your driving range.
- Check tire pressure regularly. Cold air causes tire pressure to drop, and properly inflated tires matter more for range and safety in winter than most people realize.
- Keep the car plugged in when possible, even if not charging. Some EVs use grid power to maintain battery temperature overnight when plugged in, reducing the energy needed to warm the battery once you start driving.
While driving
- Use seat heaters and a heated steering wheel over cabin heat when you can, they warm you directly with far less energy draw.
- Use an eco or winter driving mode if available, many EVs offer a mode specifically tuned to manage energy use and traction in cold, potentially slippery conditions.
- Give yourself more buffer on range estimates than you would in mild weather, since cold-weather range loss is real and worth planning around rather than cutting it close.
- Expect somewhat reduced regenerative braking in very cold conditions, some EVs limit regen strength until the battery warms up, so the pedal feel may differ from what you’re used to on a cold start.
Charging in winter
If you’re heading to a DC fast charger, setting it as your navigation destination lets many EVs automatically precondition the battery on the way, meaningfully improving charging speed on arrival. Expect charging itself to take somewhat longer in very cold conditions even with preconditioning, and plan accordingly on road trips.
