What is one-pedal driving?

One-pedal driving is a feature available on most electric vehicles that lets you accelerate and slow down using only the accelerator pedal, without ever touching the brake. When you lift your foot off the accelerator, the car slows down automatically, often enough to come to a complete stop.

How It Works

When you release the accelerator in one-pedal mode, the electric motor switches into regenerative braking mode. Instead of spinning freely, it acts as a generator, converting the car’s kinetic energy back into electricity and sending it to the battery. That resistance is what slows the car down. The result is strong, smooth deceleration the moment you ease off the pedal, with no need to move your foot to the brake.

Why It’s Useful

  • Efficiency — Regenerative braking recovers energy that would otherwise be lost as heat in friction brakes
  • Less brake wear — Your physical brake pads and rotors last much longer since they’re rarely used in normal driving
  • Easier in traffic — Stop-and-go city driving becomes less fatiguing with just one pedal to manage
  • More control — Many drivers find they have a finer sense of speed management once they adapt

Is It the Same on Every EV?

No. The strength and behavior varies by vehicle. Some EVs, like Nissan Leaf’s e-Pedal and most GM EVs with Super Cruise, offer full stop capability from one pedal. Others slow you significantly but still require a light tap of the brake to come to a complete stop. Many vehicles let you adjust the regeneration strength or turn one-pedal driving off entirely if you prefer a more traditional coasting feel.

Does It Take Getting Used To?

For most new EV drivers, yes the first few days can feel jerky as you learn how much deceleration to expect. Most drivers adapt within a week and find it hard to go back to a conventional car. The key is lifting your foot gradually rather than releasing it all at once.

The Bottom Line

One-pedal driving is one of the most-loved features among EV owners. It extends range, reduces brake maintenance costs, and makes everyday driving noticeably smoother especially in city traffic.
