How this estimate is calculated

The calculator starts with your total daily miles, commute plus errands, and adds a buffer on top so you’re not planning around a battery that’s completely empty at the end of the day. The base buffer is 20 percent. Mild winters add another 15 percent, and cold winters add 30 percent, since low temperatures reduce EV range, sometimes by 20 to 30 percent, mainly due to battery chemistry and cabin heating. If you charge irregularly, at public stations or an apartment charger rather than nightly at home, another 15 percent is added, since you’re less likely to start every day at a full charge. The final number is your total daily miles multiplied by that combined buffer.

Why a buffer matters more than the EPA number

An EV’s EPA range rating describes a best case: mild weather, a full battery, and average driving. Real-world range shifts with temperature, speed, terrain, and how hard you accelerate. Building in a buffer means the number you get here is closer to what you’ll actually be comfortable relying on day to day, not just the figure on the window sticker.
