How long does it take to charge an EV?

It depends heavily on three things: the size of your battery, how depleted it is when you start, and what type of charger you’re using. That range spans anywhere from about 20 minutes to well over 24 hours, so “it depends” is genuinely the honest short answer, but the specifics are predictable once you know which charger type you’re dealing with.

Why the last 20% takes so long

Regardless of charger type, charging slows down considerably as the battery approaches full, especially on DC fast chargers. This is intentional, a protective measure built into the battery management system rather than a fault, and it’s why many road-trip charging strategies aim for around 80% rather than waiting for a full charge. Battery size matters too

A larger battery simply holds more energy, so charging it from empty to full takes proportionally longer at any given charging speed, the same way a bigger gas tank takes longer to fill at the same pump flow rate. This is why two EVs plugged into the identical charger can show very different time-to-full estimates.

💡 Tip: Most day-to-day charging happens overnight at home on Level 2, where charging time barely matters since it happens while you sleep. DC fast charging speed only becomes a real consideration on road trips.
