How long does it take to charge an EV?

Charge time depends on the charging level and the vehicle’s battery size:

  • Level 1 (120V) — 40 to 80+ hours for a full charge on a typical BEV. Practical for PHEVs or as a slow overnight top-up.
  • Level 2 (240V) — 4 to 12 hours for most BEVs. Overnight charging at home typically provides a full charge by morning.
  • DC Fast Charging — 20 to 45 minutes for 80% charge on most modern BEVs.

Most EV owners rarely charge to 100% — manufacturers typically recommend keeping the battery between 20% and 80% for daily use to maximize long-term battery health.
