How do I charge an electric vehicle?

Charging an EV is simpler than most people expect, closer to plugging in a phone overnight than anything resembling a gas station routine. The exact steps vary slightly depending on whether you’re charging at home or at a public station, but the basic process is the same everywhere.

Charging at home, step by step

  1. Plug the charging cable into your car’s charge port. Most EVs unlock the port automatically when you approach with your key or phone app.
  2. Charging usually starts automatically once the connection is made, though some setups require confirming the session on the car’s screen or a companion app.
  3. Check your car’s app or dashboard to see estimated time to full charge and current battery percentage.
  4. Unplug when you’re ready to leave, whether that’s a full charge or wherever it happens to be when you head out in the morning.

Most owners simply plug in every night, or every few nights, rather than waiting for the battery to run low, since there’s no real downside to topping up frequently the way there might be with a gas car and a half-empty tank.

Charging at a public station

Public charging follows a similar pattern with a couple of extra steps: you’ll typically need an app or a payment method (tap-to-pay, RFID card, or a charging network’s app) to start the session, and the charger itself will usually be either a Level 2 AC unit or a DC fast charger. Our post on the difference between AC and DC charging explains what to expect from each type in terms of speed.

Getting set up for home charging

Most EVs can charge from a standard household outlet in a pinch, but a dedicated Level 2 home charger is what most owners end up installing for meaningfully faster, more convenient overnight charging. Setting one up typically involves an electrician evaluating your panel capacity and installing a dedicated circuit.
