How this estimate is calculated
The calculator multiplies your monthly mileage by your vehicle’s efficiency (in kWh per 100 miles) to get total energy use, then multiplies that by your electricity rate to get a dollar cost. The same logic runs in reverse for the gas comparison, using your miles-per-gallon figure and the price per gallon you enter. It’s the same basic math utilities have used for decades to estimate energy bills, just applied to a car instead of a house.
By default, the electricity and gas prices are pre-filled with current national average rates, pulled live from the U.S. Department of Energy’s FuelEconomy.gov data. The default efficiency figure (27 kWh/100 miles) reflects a typical mid-size EV, swap it for your exact vehicle’s number from our EPA Ratings page for a more precise result.
Why your actual cost may differ
Electricity rates vary widely by state and utility, anywhere from around $0.10/kWh in low-cost regions to $0.35+/kWh in others, and many utilities offer cheaper overnight or off-peak rates specifically for EV charging. Cold weather also reduces efficiency, meaning more kWh (and more cost) per mile in winter than the same trip in summer. Public fast-charging is typically priced higher than charging at home.
