My 2012 Volt had that bearing replaced at 19K miles. According to the dealer, it is a "Known defect" with early Volt models. There is a GM service bulletin on it. It took my dealer over 1 week to fix it. So far, I have put on another 6K miles on it with no problem....
GM was on top of it and dealer did a good job fixing it while gave me a rental car (gas).
Apparently, it is "popular enough" that there is an internal service bulletin with pictures and specific tools and instruction on how to fix it. The dealer told me that the later 2013 model had this issue fixed completely and my repair had the "improved" parts and design installed.
